With the rise in popularity of CBD, there are now countless CBD products to choose from. According to Marijuana Business Magazine, some industry experts estimate there are now “hundreds, if not thousands” of hemp CBD companies popping up online. To see a dozen new CBD companies a week isn’t uncommon.
While there are companies that offer CBD products made with US-grown hemp, several of the current CBD products on the market are sourced from hemp grown in European countries or Asia. Hemp has been grown in Europe for years, and China is quickly becoming one of the leading global producers of hemp.
What’s the difference, though? Isn’t hemp pretty much the same wherever its grown? Not so much.
All Hemp is Not Created Equal
Hemp is one of the most resilient crops on earth. It requires little maintenance once planted and can survive in even the most unforgiving of environments. Hemp is one of the easiest plants to grow and is highly adaptable to a variety of climates and growing conditions.
While foreign production of hemp is at an all-time high, not everything produced overseas is regulated. Basically, this means it can be cultivated in whatever conditions farmers choose. This can lead to subpar quality CBD products that aren’t exactly what they’re cracked up to be.
The conditions that hemp is cultivated in are crucial to the quality of the CBD products produced with it. Poor cultivation practices and unhealthy soil will lead to CBD products that don’t come close to their potential.
Hemp and Phytoremediation
Aside from being one of the most versatile plants on the planet, there is something else extremely amazing about hemp. When it grows, it naturally absorbs all the toxins present in the soil it’s cultivated in. It is commonly used in a process known as phytoremediation, where plants are used to get rid of toxins that are present in the soil.
Hemp is so adept at absorbing toxins present in soil (such as heavy metals, radioactive waste, and other contaminants) that thousands of hemp plants were planted in the 90s after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. While this is an absolutely remarkable aspect about hemp, it is also something to keep in mind when purchasing CBD products made from hemp.
When purchasing hemp-derived products, it’s imperative that the soil the hemp was grown in is healthy and free of toxins. Hemp will absorb whatever is present in the soil it was cultivated in. Clean, healthy, safe soil ensures you’re getting a healthy, safe product.
Choosing US-Grown Hemp CBD Products
In 2014, President Obama signed the 2014 Farm Bill, which allowed for state departments of agriculture and universities to begin cultivating hemp that contains less than 0.3 percent THC. Any hemp grow site must be certified and registered in the state in which its grown, requiring that growers work closely with their state department of agriculture.
While there are undoubtedly some legitimate products that come from hemp grown overseas, there’s no way to be sure it was grown in the healthiest environment possible without exposure to toxins that could possibly present in the soil.
